Hopefully at this stage of the game, you have honed your interviewing
skills to a fine point. However, it never hurts to review those little
things in an interview that an applicant can overlook. Personal
appearance is extremely important. It is the first thing that an
interviewer will notice about you. Interest and enthusiasm generate
energy, and if you are lacking either it will be a major strike against you.
Remember, you are there because your goals and objectives prompted you
to walk through the front door. If you do not have a solid hold on
personal career planning, it is a sure bet that the hiring manager will
not take you very seriously. Having excellent insight into the nature of
the organization will be viewed as impressive. It means you are the kind
of person who does not mind doing the research. Body posture is also a
key element in gauging the qualifications of an applicant. Poor posture
will speak volumes about your self-esteem or a lack thereof.
Speaking is also a major determinant of getting hired for the job. Poor
volume, dictation, or grammar will betray you the moment you open your
mouth. Another common mistake is to show an unwillingness to start at
the bottom. This would be an indication that you are the kind of person
that expects things much too soon. You should make it a point to
practice interviewing in the mirror so that your sense of
self-confidence and poise will be on point. Money is important, but make
sure it is not the overriding reason for wanting to work for a company.
This shows a lack of both tack and maturity, and is a sign that you may
jump ship at the first outside offer. Finally, you may have to swallow
some pride and take a little criticism on occasion. If an interviewer
makes a suggestion, you should take it in a positive light. It may
indicate you are being favored for the position.
Good Luck!
