ABOUT THE CLASSICAL THEATRE OF HARLEM
The Classical Theatre of Harlem (CTH) is a professional theatre company, and the only year-round theatre in Harlem on an Equity contract. From a fledgling workshop in 1999 at Harlem School of the Arts, to being named ‘One of 8 theatres to watch in America’ by The Drama League, CTH is unmatched in production achievement. Recognized for theatre excellence, CTH has received 20 AUDELCO Awards, 5 OBIE Awards, 2 Lucille Lortel Awards, 1 Drama Desk Award in its short history.
It has presented nearly forty productions that have included works by Anton Chekhov, Samuel Beckett, Euripides, Jean Genet, Langston Hughes, Adrienne Kennedy, William Shakespeare, Derek Walcott and August Wilson among many others. CTH combines non-traditional casting, original adaptations, music and dance in ways that render works from the classical canon as fresh, innovative, and essentially a new experience of world classics. It is CTH’s vision to create the next great American theatre company whose value to its community is inherent and essential, a company that is engaged in producing theatre that has the capacity to change lives and truly reflects the diversity of ideas and racial tapestry that is America.

3. To create and nurture a new, young, and culturally diverse audience for the classics;
4. To heighten the awareness of theatre and of great art in Harlem.
The Classical Theatre of Harlem’s (CTH’s) Managing Director will join a revitalized institution poised for success with a compelling mission and exciting artistic plans for the future. S/he will join a senior management team led by Producing Artistic Director Ty Jones, and a strong and dedicated Board. The Managing Director will be responsible for leading the day-to-day management of the company, including finance, marketing, general administration and human resources efforts. S/he is responsible for the consistent achievement of the company’s financial objectives and will work closely with the Board and the Producing Artistic Director to develop short and long-term goals and plans for the organization.
The successful candidate will be entrepreneurial and energetic with a passion for theater and the mission of CTH. S/he will have experience in a similar position with broad organizational responsibilities with a focus on financial, staff, and theatrical management. The candidate will have experience with house management, ticketing and online box office applications. S/he will have a demonstrated track record coordinating contracts, theatrical union negotiation, and procuring performance and rehearsal space. S/he will have strong organizational and project management skills and act as a partner to the Producing Director to conceive, manage and produce all programming for the organization. Prior experience working with publicity, public relations, press and theatrical agents is preferred.
The successful candidate will have superb interpersonal skills and be an excellent communicator in verbal, written, and presentation forms. S/he will report directly to a passionate and committed 8-member Board of Directors, led by incoming Chair, Peggy King Jorde. S/he will be mature, polished, and diplomatic—able to appropriately collaborate with artistic, production, administrative, and volunteer staff associated with CTH. At the same time, the candidate will be a self-motivated advocate for CTH, and be able to guide the organization towards fiscally prudent decisions. S/he will build positive relationships with individuals and organizations throughout the community to heighten awareness of the CTH and to expand the base of support at all levels.
Marketing and experience with social media promotion will be favorably regarded, as audience development, database mining, and the application of new technologies are all high priorities for CTH’s future.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Role of the Managing Director
The Managing Director reports to the Board of Directors and works in partnership with the Producing Artistic Director. The Managing Director plays an integral role in the development and execution of the organization’s strategic plan in addition to day-to-day administrative activities, including:
1. GENERAL ADMINISTRATION: Act as first point-of-contact responding to inquiries and/or forwarding information to appropriate parties. Hire and supervise the production staff, recruits and trains the volunteer staff and exercises responsible stewardship of all resources within the organization and collaborates with the Producing Artistic Director to ensure optimum balance of artistic quality, financial strength, and institutional integrity. Establish and maintain highly efficient and cost-effective operations for the organization. Plan for the organization’s technology needs and manage facilities requirements for the future.
2. FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT: Oversee the fiscal integrity of the organization including the preparation of the annual budget, creation of monthly financial reporting and auditing infrastructure, and financial accountability to monitor and report budget activity. Adherence to non-profit and tax-exempt procedures. Coordinates with the Producing Artistic Director and Development Director to develop a budget to support the organization’s programmatic and institutional priorities.
3. STAFF MANAGEMENT: Act as primary supervisor for the Director of Development, Volunteers/Interns, and actively coach and mentor direct reports to succeed. Partner closely with the Producing Artistic Director on all production and program staffing needs and recruit staff as necessary.
4. HUMAN RESOURCES: Actively participate in implementation of employee policies and ensure full compliance with state and local labor laws. Ensure staff has adequate resources and clearly defined responsibilities. Manage payroll through ADP and administer employee benefits.
5. THEATER MANAGEMENT & RESOURCES: Research and procure necessary rehearsal and performance spaces. Draft contracts for artistic and productions staff for all productions and programs. Negotiate contracts, letters of agreement, and bond requirements with theatrical unions and manage organization’s relationship and necessary reporting. Procure house management and usher staff/volunteers for productions and programs.
6. AUDIENCE DEVELOPMENT/EARNED INCOME/BOX OFFICE: The Managing Director works with the Director of Development to plan and implement audience development activities including marketing strategies, surveys, public relations and promotional events for productions, ticket sales campaigns, production and program sponsorships, and the coordination of timely and effective website updates with the web developer. Partner with the Producer to determine ticket price points and manage sales & audit through Ovationtix.
7. STRATEGY DEVELOPMENT: In consultation with senior management, and the Board, develop and execute comprehensive strategies, with measurable goals and objectives that meet CTH’s annual operating requirements and lay continuing groundwork for increasing revenue in subsequent seasons.
8. BOARD RELATIONS: Act as chief advisor and liaison to the Board and its committees. Participate in Board strategic planning, and assume an active role in serving and supporting the Board and in coordination with the Producing Artistic Director and Director of Development. Assists the Board as appropriate with the recruitment, education and development of Board members. Work closely with Board committees to engage the members in the service of Classical Theatre of Harlem.
9. FUNDRAISING: Works with the Director of Development, the Producing Artistic Director, and the Board (as necessary) to strategize fundraising activities of the theater, including individual gifts, Board gifts, special events, corporate giving, government support and foundation grants.
10. COMMUNICATIONS/MARKETING/WEBSITE: Oversee the organization’s public image and research, solicit, and secure publicity, public relations, and press representation for all productions. Partner with the management team to develop marketing materials and resources. Coordinate necessary website updates with the web developer.
11. ADVOCACY MANAGEMENT: Advance and manage the relationship between CTH and various key local and regional organizations, including government agencies, community and local business groups and arts organizations. In coordination with the Producing Artistic Director, the Director of Development and from time to time Board leaders present the public face of CTH.
• A Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited university or college
• A minimum of two years or more of solid experience in fiscal management and/or business operations.
Experience in fundraising, Board relations, marketing and prior experience with a theatre company is highly desirable but not required.
• Demonstrate capacity to lead, manage and motivate staff & volunteers, collaborate effectively with a Board.
• Strong financial planning & management, strategy, budgeting, analytical, and communication/writing skills
Ability to successfully develop and implement long term strategic and annual tactical plans
• A passion for the arts and CTH’s mission, programs, and future plans
• Proficiency in MS Suite (Word, Excel & PowerPoint), and experience with ticketing software, social media, and online sharing platforms preferred
• The ability to work evenings/weekends and be available to attend all CTH performances and events
