Columbia Gorge Community College

The Dalles, OR ~ November 14, 2017

The Board of Education of Columbia Gorge Community College (CGCC) is searching for the next president of the college. We invite applications from candidates who can lead the college as it strives to better achieve its mission of “building dreams and transforming lives”.

Characteristics of the Next President of CGCC

Candidates must have: a Masters or preferably a Doctorate degree from an accredited university or college, at least three years of experience in a senior management-level position, and demonstrated experience working with diverse communities. Community College or University administrative and teaching experience is preferred. The president reports to a seven-member, elected Board of Education, and is expected to maintain a transparent and effective working relationship with it.

We seek a strategic, innovative, and visionary planner who can set priorities, align plans with the budget, and make difficult decisions. Our president should be able to work collaboratively with community stakeholders, faculty, and staff to:

  • Align the college strategic plan and programs with student and community needs.
  • Expand the college’s workforce development programs and partnerships while also strengthening our academic curriculum.
  • Evaluate and improve organizational performance
  • Foster a strong participatory, shared-governance style to create a culture of cohesiveness within the college

Our candidate should have significant budget management experience.

CGCC is a smaller college that serves a diverse region in north-central Oregon and south-central Washington from two campuses within the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area in The Dalles and Hood River, Oregon. The college served just over 4300 students (1680 credit students) in the last academic year, and has a current FTE of 844.

CGCC offers six Associate degrees, seven Associate of Applied Science degrees, and 14 certificate programs. It has outstanding nursing and renewable energy/Electro-Mechanical Technology programs that are strongly supported by the community. A majority of CGCC’s students self-designate as white, but the college also has a large number of Hispanic/Latinx students (27%). Accordingly, the Hispanic Associations of Colleges and Universities (HACU) designated CGCC as a Hispanic-Serving Institution in March of 2017.

The Area and the Lifestyle

Columbia Gorge Community College is located in an area of exceptional scenic beauty, recreational opportunity, and climatic diversity. The Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area offers spectacular waterfalls and scenic vistas, while the majestic Mt. Adams and Mt. Hood volcanoes dominate the skyline to the north and south.

Manufacturing, technology, and IT companies are expanding rapidly in the area, which is home to companies such as Insitu/Boeing, Tofurky, Cardinal Glass, Sagetech, HoodTech, and Google. Much of the area is connected to agricultural pursuits, such as large acreages of wheat fields, orchards of cherry, pear, apple, and dozens of vineyards. Outdoor recreation is one of the primary lifestyle benefits of the area, and it attracts a busy tourist industry. Portland is only an hour away, with its various urban attractions and access to international travel.
