Production Editor

The University of Chicago Press is seeking a Production Editor for our Books Division. The responsibilites include: initiating and monitoring the work of freelance copyeditors, proofreaders, and indexers for book-length scholarly manuscripts and ensures their use of the professional principles and methods set forth in The Chicago Manual of Style.


For assigned projects, the Production Editor will take responsibility for all manuscript components (text, tables, notes, reference lists, appendixes, illustration captions, and indexes.) Determines the level of copyediting a manuscript requires and establishes copyediting schedules. Initiates and monitors freelance editors, proofreaders, and indexers and ensures their use of the professional principles and methods set forth in The Chicago Manual of Style. Codes and prepares copyedited manuscripts for typesetting (or oversees their coding and preparation.) Serves as liaison with authors and other Press staff during editing and proof stages. Oversees all stages of proof to bound book. Edits, proofreads, and checks catalog and jacket copy and jacket mechanicals and proofs. May personally copyedit manuscripts as needed.
