The Physical Therapy Faculty Practice at UIC is seeking Clinical Instructor to assist in administering cardiopulmonary exercise tests and supervise cardiac rehab exercise sessions. The Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing Laboratory performs exercise tests for diagnostic purposes on individuals with suspected coronary artery disease, pre and post aerobic capacity assessment for patients attending the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program, as well as performance testing for active individuals. The Cardiac Rehabilitation Program provides monitored exercise and education sessions for patients during their acute recovery from a cardiac event.  

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Explain test protocol and procedures to the individual being tested
• Develop and lead group exercise for a group with consideration for all ability levels
• Perform exercising blood pressures
• Monitor perceived exertion
• Maintain exercise testing and cardiac rehabilitation equipment using appropriate preparation, utilization, and sanitization techniques
• Operate a metabolic cart used to analyze expired gases
• Monitor individual Electrocardiography (ECG) through rehabilitation sessions or testing stages
• Teach in the Department of Physical Therapy, pursue a scholarly agenda, and service on department, college and/or university committees as assigned by the Department Head

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in exercise physiology or related field
  • Certified in Basic Life Support/CPR
  • Must have the ability to frequently work in a standing position
  • Communicate effectively with co-workers, patients, physicians, family members, and others in either a one-on-one or group situation utilizing appropriate language


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support
  • Graded exercise testing experience in a clinical setting
  • Experience working in a cardiac rehabilitation program
  • Visually monitor and interpret ECG tracings
  • Accurately review and interpret clinical measurements such as ECG tracings, hemodynamic evaluations, patient signs and symptoms frequently employed in the monitoring of patients
