Academic Advisor

The Department of Kinesiology and Nutrition in the College of Applied Health Sciences seeks an Academic Advisor to provide academic advising to the department’s undergraduate student population.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Monitor academic progress of students to determine eligibility and satisfactory progress toward degree
  • Meet with students to assess and advise on academic and career issues by planning course schedules, recommending courses and determining appropriate education solutions
  • Maintain and verify official student files
  • Evaluate and verify transfer transcripts from other academic institutions for equivalencies and application to degree program
  • Serve on committee to verify official college lists making decision regarding probation, drop and degree status
  • Identify options for student to satisfy degree requirements
  • Interpret and explain college and university policies and procedures
  • Assist in recruitment of potential students
  • Gather and prepare various reports as requested
  • Develop and conduct program and workshops presenting academic information to orientation groups and potential students and parents
  • Perform other related duties and participate in specific programs as assigned

Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, or related field required. Master’s degree in higher education or administration preferred. A minimum of three years’ experience in higher education academic advising is required with five+ years experience preferred. Knowledge of university academic policies and requirements, academic records, college entrance procedures and available student resources required. Demonstrated knowledge of advising techniques and philosophies, working collaboratively with team members, and ability to manage academic processes with high attention to detail, clear communication, and efficient organization required. Ability to speak/present in front of large groups of students/prospective students with passion and impact, excellent writing and analytical skills, and passion for student success required. Experience with student data bases and degree audit systems preferred.
