Editorial Associate, II

Job Summary:

This Editorial Associate collaborates with two acquisitions editors, one of whom is responsible for sociology and education, and the other for writing and reference (including the Chicago Manual of Style).

The associate acts as a liaison with authors and reviewers as well as with other Press departments (design, editing, production, marketing).


  • The associate oversees collection of confidential materials in preparation of dossiers for Editorial Committee and Board of Publications meetings.
  • Prepares book estimates, budgets, and contracts; researches sales of comparable titles and prepares applications for publication subsidies.
  • Assiduously maintains database of proposals and manuscripts under review and researches appropriate reviewers for projects.
  • Prepares transmittal materials on new manuscripts for editing, design and production; evaluates author illustration and permission programs and directs authors on the modification and completion of these programs; proofreads page proofs, catalog and cover copy, and other materials circulated as part of the prepublication materials for books.
  • The Associate also collaborates with other Editorial Associates in Books Acquisitions to assess and refine best practices for departmental workflow.
  • May travel to scholarly meetings with editors to participate in author meetings and to staff book exhibits with the marketing department.
  • May present projects at Press editorial, transmittal, and Board meetings in editors’ absence.


  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.

  • Demonstrated ability to multitask and work in a highly productive environment required.
  • Excellent organizational skills required.
  • Excellent time management skills required, including the ability to multi-task with minimum supervision and meet overlapping deadlines.
  • Meticulous attention to detail required.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team required.
  • Analytical skills and the facility to engage with academic writing and the university community required.
  • Excellent computer skills in PC environment and knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel required.
  • A genuine interest in and intellectual engagement with the publication of scholarly books preferred.
  • Decision-making skills required.
  • Ability to handle confidential matters required.
  • Ability to travel required.
