Manuscript Editor, Critical Inquiry

Job Summary:

Manuscript Editor, Critical Inquiry: Assists the Managing Editor of the journal with all aspects of publication, in particular the editing and preparation of manuscripts and proofreading of galleys and page proofs. Conducts research to verify accuracy of facts and citations. Serves as liaison between editors and authors. Assists in the overall operation of journal editorial office. Solicits, edits, and posts book reviews.

Responsibilities:

  • Edits books, journals, or other written materials for grammar, punctuation, spelling, style, form, sentence structure, organization, clarity, consistency, and accuracy to create online and/or print versions of publications. Determines level of editing required.
  • Establishes and oversees editing schedules.
  • Oversees the coordination of manuscript elements supplied by other departments; Collaborates with authors to resolve problems and to clarify meaning; Assists with quality control by proofreading edited manuscripts; Checks typeset proofs before author review.
  • Reviews typeset proofs or revised written copy returned by authors and approves or rejects changes. Enters author changes as appropriate and checks typeset pages. Has final responsibility for all manuscript components.
  • May hire and oversee the work of freelance professionals or independent contractors. May oversee the work of editorial assistants and student assistants.

Additional Requirements​​

Education, Experience or Certifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Graduate course work in English, philosophy, or art history preferred  

Experience:

  • A minimum of two years of experience copyediting (newspaper work does not qualify) required.
  • Prior publishing experience preferred.

Technical Knowledge or Skills:

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office required.
  • Experience with HTML and Adobe Photoshop preferred.
