Instrumentation and Research Laboratories Director

University at Buffalo’s Research and Education in eNergy, Environment and Water (RENEW) Institute is a transdisciplinary, university-wide initiative that addresses the fundamental, interlocking survival issues that face human beings of the twenty-first century. Through research as well as educational programming, focusing on complex energy and environmental issues, we connect the dots among complex sustainability challenges, including their social and economic dimensions.
RENEW Institute seeks an Instrumentation and Research Laboratories Director to oversee RENEW’s portfolio of laboratory instrumentation, assume supervisorial responsibilities for 10-15 doctoral students in Environmental and Analytical Chemistry, assist in grant writing, conduct original research, and publish papers in peer-reviewed journals. 
 
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
A.   Oversee and maintain RENEW laboratories.
  • Monitor usage of instrumentation and provide corrective instruction as needed.
  • Work with vendors to ensure upkeep and repair of instrumentation.
  • Liaise with university facilities staff to ensure that laboratories are clean and safe. 
  • Ensure that evolving COVID-19 protocols are followed in all laboratory spaces.
 
B.   Train, supervise, and mentor chemistry doctoral students.
  • Train and supervise doctoral students in safety protocols and proper usage of instrumentation; provide corrective guidance as needed.
  • Oversee research activities of doctoral students in analytical chemistry. 
  • Review draft journal articles of doctoral students and provide constructive criticism.
  • Provide feedback and constructive criticism to doctoral students’ oral and poster presentations, and other research communication materials.
  • Offer mentoring to PhD students who request or require assistance to succeed. 
 
C.   Develop independent research in the area of Environmental Chemistry.
  • Develop research projects on the fate, transport, and health effects of legacy and emerging environmental contaminants
  • Prepare research results for publication.
  • Collaborate with RENEW Institute scientists in development of research papers. 
 
D.   Provide technical support in grant proposal development.
  • Assist other RENEW staff and faculty members in sustaining the Institute by monitoring email and news articles for relevant proposal calls.
  • Support RENEW research faculty in the development of grant proposals by developing ideas and keeping up with current literature.
